> Pruning code 1

Clematis in this group produce their flowers directly from the old stems and therefore, pruning must not be carried out until all flowering has been completed.

Remove all dead and weak stems immediately after flowering.

All stems should be tied into position after pruning. Then, new growth will be produced which will ripen during the late summer and produce its main crop of flowers the following spring.

Clematis in this group consist of the alpina, macropetala and montana types.

> Pruning code 2

Clematis in this group produce their flowers on the previous season's stems and consist of the early, large-flowered cultivars, the double, semi-double and mid-season, large-flowered cultivars.

The flowers are borne on single stems which vary from 10cm to 90cm in length.

Remove all dead and weak stems and shorten the remainder by 15-25cm where a strong pair of buds are apparent. Tie all remaining stems into position. Each stem should be given sufficient space to grow without 'overcrowding'.

Pruning should be carried out during late February or early March when weather permits. It is best not to prune during frosty weather.

e.g. Nelly Moser, Mrs N Thompson, The President, Vyvyan Pennell

> Pruning code 3

Clematis in this group produce their flowers on new stems each year. The previous season's top growth becomes useless and dies away natually each winter.

All previous season's top growth must be removed to allow the current season's stems room to grow to maturity. This clean-cut, tidy up of the plant also removes any stems which may have become infected with mildew, or any other disease during the autumn, giving the plant a fresh start each year.

Pruning is again in late February or early March depending on weather conditions. Prune to 30cm from ground-level, cutting just above a leaf joint.

e.g. viticellas, texensis, tanguticas, Prince Charles, integrifolias
